GM recalled 638000 U.S. SUVs and trucks due to brake problems

On November 1, General Motors said Thursday it would recall 638000 U.S. SUVs and pick-up trucks as wheel speed sensors could fail, which could lead to brake problems.

The recalled models include 2015-2020 Chevrolet suburban, Tahoe and Yukon, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.

A faulty sensor can cause unexpected activation of the driveline protection system and unexpected braking of the opposite wheel of the faulty sensor. The Detroit carmaker said this could lead to unexpected steering and increase the risk of a crash.

GM said it was not aware of any traffic accidents related to the problem, but found 150 on-site claims that the condition caused the vehicle to unexpectedly brake or move sideways.

In May this year, a GM dealer submitted a warranty report related to this issue at GMC Yukon in 2018. Two days later, a GM brand quality manager submitted the report to GM's "speak up for safety" project, which tracks potential safety issues and prompts GM to investigate and test.
