According to the level of petals
Traditional peony varieties are divided into: single petal (layer) class, double petal (layer) class, thousand petal (layer) class. Sunflower, lotus, rose, hemispherical, crown and Hydrangea are six flower types.
According to the shape of petals

Variety Daquan of peony
Univalvular type
The petals are 2-3 whorls, 10-15 pieces, wide and flat, with 200-300 stamens and 4-6 pistils. This type of flower is represented by 'opium Purple', 'pomegranate red' and 'fengdanbai'.
Lotus type
The petals are 4-5 rings, 20-25 pieces. The petals are wide, similar in shape and size, and arranged clearly. The pistil development is normal and the seed setting ability is strong. However, some varieties occasionally have petalization of stamens or pistil stigmas. This type of flower is represented by 'Lotus like', 'jinyunhong' and 'yubanbai'.
Crown type
The outer petals are 2-5 whorls, wide and flat, most or all stamens turn into finely wrinkled petals, and the petals are dense and towering, like a crown. The inner petals are irregularly arranged, and there are usually normal stamens or stamens in the process of degeneration between the petals, and anthers are often left between the petals; the pistils degenerate or petalized, and occasionally bear fruit. These flower types are represented by 'lantianyu', 'Huhong', 'yaohuang', 'shouhanhong', etc.
Hydrangea type
Stamens are fully petalized, the shape and size of inner and outer petals are similar, crowding and protruding, and they are spherical; pistils are basically or completely degenerated or petalized, and have no seed setting ability. This type of flower is represented by 'doulv', 'lvxiangqiu' and 'xueyingzhaoxia'.
Chrysanthemum type
The petals are more than 6-whorls. The petals are similar in shape, arranged orderly and well-organized. They gradually become smaller from the outside to the inside, and occasionally petalized. The pistils are 5-11 and grow normally or become smaller. The stigma of some varieties has petal phenomenon and the knot strength is poor. The flower types of this kind of flower are represented by 'Rose Red', 'congzhongxiao', 'yinhongqiaodui' and 'jinpaohong'.
Rosa type
The petals are multi whorled, the petals gradually become smaller from the outside to the inside, some stamens turn into normal petals, the pistil degenerates into small or petalized, and the knot strength is poor. This type of flower is represented by 'zierqiao', 'Wujin Yaohui', 'Hongxia Zhenghui'
Gold ring type
The outer petals are 2-3 whorls, wide and flat. Some stamen petals in the center of the flower turn into long and narrow vertical petals. There is a circle of normal stamens between the central petal and the outer petal, and the pistil is normal or slightly petalized, so it has poor fruit setting ability. This type of flower type is very few, represented by 'daytime e', 'Jun Yanhong', 'pink peach blossom' and 'Yumeiren'.
Tuogui type
The outer petals are 2-5 whorls, wide and neat. Some stamen petals turn into slender petals. Anther or anther traces are often left at the end of petals. Normal stamens are intermingled between petals, which are irregularly arranged and sparse. Pistils are normal or slightly petalized, and have knot strength. This type of flower is represented by 'shunnvzhuang', 'Jiaohong', 'xiane' and 'sanbiansaiyu'.
Louzitai pavilion type
The stamen petalization of the lower flower is more sufficient, which is similar to the normal petal shape, and the pistil petals turn into normal petals or color petals; the upper petals are slightly larger, and the number is less, and the stamens are basically petalized or degenerated; the pistil petals turn into normal petals or color petals, and some varieties degenerate and disappear. These flower types are represented by 'chilonghuancai', 'shengdanlu', 'yuloudiancui', 'zichonglou'.
Thousand layer pavilion type
The lower petals are more than 4 rings. The petals are arranged in order and similar in shape. There are no stamens and stamens between the petals. Stamens few or few, and stamens reduced. This type of flower is represented by 'linghuazhanlu', 'Zhihong' and 'shouxinghong'.
