Foreign species of fire ants have been found inside the container of a Chinese cargo ship in nizaki, Hyogo, Japan, according to Japanese reports.

Fire ants are reddish brown, about 2.5 to 6 mm in length, and will burn after being stung. Red fire ants have the ability to attack and repeatedly sting people. Most people only feel pain and discomfort, and a few people are allergic to the toxic protein in the venom, which will cause anaphylactic shock and risk of death.

According to the Ministry of environment of Japan, the containers from the cargo ships sailing from Guangzhou port of China were unloaded at Kobe port of Kobe City on May 20 and kept until May 25. Ants were found inside the containers when they were picked up in nisaki city on May 26. On June 1, the containers were moved to Kobe City to start disinfection work, which ended on June 5.

According to the Ministry of environment of Japan, the possibility that fire ants have invaded the surrounding areas cannot be completely denied. Traps have been set up around three places in Kobe City and nizaki City, and emergency investigations have been carried out at the same time, but they have not been found so far.

The red fire ant originated from South America, but once settled in a new environment, it is hard to root out. Now it is mainly distributed in North America, China and the Philippines. In 2005, Japan designated specific alien organisms in the law on alien organisms, prohibited the introduction and breeding in principle, and continued to be vigilant against the invasion of alien species.
