According to EURONET news agency, recently, the Italian police informed the media that violence against women in Italy showed an upward trend in 2018. A total of 142 women were killed throughout the year, a year-on-year increase of 0.7% over 2017, of which 119 victims died of domestic violence.
According to police survey statistics, jealousy and possessiveness were the main engines of violence against women in Italy in 2018, accounting for 32.8% of the total number of female murders. In addition, sexual violence cases increased by 5.4% year-on-year, homicides caused by entanglement increased by 4.4%, and domestic violence homicides increased by 11.7%.
In 2017, 112 women died from domestic violence in Italy, increasing to 119 in 2018. Among the female murders targeted in 2018, 78 women died of partner murder, accounting for 65.6%, an increase of 16.4% compared with 2017. In addition, 59 of the victims died at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends, and 19 victims died of the murder of their ex husbands or boyfriends.
Of all women victims, 48 were over 64 years old, accounting for 33.8% of the total number of victims. While 28% of the victims had been abused, threatened and domestic violence before they died, and a third party usually knew about their experience.
Statistics show that 66 women were killed in northern Italy in 2018, accounting for 45% of the total number of women victims, 50 in southern Italy and 26 in central Italy. In addition to jealousy and possessiveness, the motives for killing women include family disputes and quarrels, which account for 16%.
The report points out that in 2018, guns were the main means of committing crimes against women, and a total of 46 people died of shooting. In addition to female homicides, there were 17453 cases of domestic violence against women, the highest record in the past five years.
