Why do wisdom teeth grow? Do wisdom teeth have to be extracted

Most of the time, dentists will advise us to remove wisdom teeth. There are three reasons

1. If wisdom teeth can not completely grow naturally, the crown will be partially covered by the gum, thus forming a Pericoronal pocket. The pericoronitis is easy to cause pericoronitis of wisdom teeth, and the patients with recurrent pericoronitis will have toothache, mouth opening restriction, eating difficulties and other symptoms;

2. If the wisdom tooth is long and crooked, there will be an angle between the wisdom tooth and the adjacent tooth, which is easy to insert food. After a long time, the wisdom tooth and the adjacent teeth are easy to be damaged into cavities and even cause pulpitis;

3. If the position and direction of wisdom tooth growth is abnormal, the occlusal degree between upper and lower teeth will be affected.

So, does wisdom tooth have to be pulled out?

The answer is no!

There are three types of wisdom teeth that can be retained:

1. The position and direction of wisdom tooth growth are normal;

2. There was no caries in wisdom teeth, and there was no history of inflammation and pain in the soft tissue around the crown of wisdom teeth;

3. Have opposite teeth.

Wisdom teeth must be extracted only in the following five cases:

1. Cavities. Because the growth position of wisdom teeth is deep in the mouth, it is inconvenient to clean, so it is very easy to become cavities;

2. Invasion of adjacent teeth. If the growth space of wisdom teeth is insufficient, wisdom teeth will continue to grow against adjacent teeth, which may lead to the failure of both teeth;

3. Insufficient growth space. If the growth space of wisdom teeth is not enough, serious gum swelling and tooth pain will appear during the growth process;

3. No bite. If there is no rival tooth on the opposite side of wisdom tooth, the occlusal function of the tooth may be affected;

4. Impacted teeth. This type of wisdom tooth, usually buried in the alveolar bone, must be pulled out when you feel pain.
