Tian Hongjiao: we have 5 female soldiers this time. I am the monitor. I am 26 years old. The other four were Deng Xiaoyu (19), Qiu Zemin (19), Dai Yajuan (23) and Xiong Jie (23). In addition to me, the other four are recruits who joined the army only last year. One '80s' and four' 90s'.
Reporter: is there a saying in the army about the first women's earthquake rescue team?
Tian Hongjiao: No, it was later called by the media. But our battalion is specialized in rescue work. Last year, it was the first time that female soldiers were recruited. As far as I know, this rescue team should be the first female rescue team to undertake the task of disaster relief.
Reporter: from September last year to before the earthquake, what was your daily training for earthquake rescue?
Tian Hongjiao: the usual training mainly covers three categories of courses, including communication, ground explosion (mine blasting), and operator operation, all of which are aimed at earthquake rescue.
Reporter: what's the difference between normal training and male soldiers? What's the result?
Tian Hongjiao: it's no different. It's the same as when I was at school. There are men and women. The results of female soldiers are not bad. We have a "mine digging" homework. The passing time is 3 minutes. The scores of all five of us are within one minute, which is better than that of most male soldiers.

The situation in the disaster area is more serious than expected
Reporter: This is the first time to enter the earthquake stricken area?
Tian Hongjiao: Yes. This is the first time for us.
Reporter: is the situation in the disaster area the same as your previous psychological prediction?
Tian Hongjiao: when we received the task, we were stationed in Dali for training. The news said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.5. We all thought it was a small earthquake and it would not be very serious. When we arrived in Ludian, we found that most of the houses in the county were good, but after entering Longtoushan Town, the epicenter, the situation was much more serious than we thought. The old streets in the town were completely destroyed, and the roads and houses could not even see the basic outline.
Reporter: what did you do on your first day in the disaster area?
Tian Hongjiao: the road from Ludian County to Longtoushan town was blocked at that time. We ran 30 kilometers all the way to the town. As soon as we got to the town, we met a father who said that his three daughters and a little grandson were buried in the ruins. We unloaded our equipment and went. We arrived in the town at 9:50 a.m. and around 3:00 p.m., all the father's children were found. Unfortunately, the three girls were gone.
Reporter: the rescue has been going on for a week. Are there any regrets in your work?
Tian Hongjiao: the biggest regret is that we failed to rescue the survivors. Most of the adobe houses collapsed in the earthquake, and there was no gap at all after the collapse. Many people may have died of suffocation instead of trauma.
Reporter: what impresses you?
Tian Hongjiao: let's go to ganjiazhaizi. Half of the mountain collapsed and buried more than 50 households in a village. The collapse area there is too large to see the shape of the house. I don't know where to start the search and rescue. The feeling of being totally helpless at the scene made me particularly depressed.

Always want to cry, but can't cry
Reporter: is this the first time that you have been so close to death?
Tian Hongjiao: the first time. I don't know if it is an illusion. When the father's three daughters were dug out, I felt that they were still warm and their bodies were still soft, but people were not there. The oldest of the three sisters is 23 years old, and the youngest is only 12 years old.
Reporter: you are all young. How can you face this scene?
Tian Hongjiao: people always say goodbye in life and death. In that scene, I really understand how cruel these four words are. I don't think I'll forget the way that father leaned over his three daughters. The players and I are both girls, daughters. My tears have been spinning in my eyes, two small players did not control, tears fell down.
Reporter: do you need to control your tears?
Tian Hongjiao: Yes. In fact, these days, I always want to cry, but can't cry. We are soldiers. We come here to save people. Every day, I recite a sentence in my heart countless times: be professional.
Reporter: is there a special course on emotion management in the ordinary training?
Tian Hongjiao: we have special psychological counseling courses. Daily training to watch some of the army's previous disaster relief video, sometimes watching those I will shed tears. But when I get to the scene, I need to be professional, especially if I am still the leader. If I am in a mood breakdown, what should the players do?
