there are 16 students in Leiming Village Primary School in Juguang Township, Yilong County, Sichuan Province. Liang Shumin, 73, is the only teacher in this primary school. Liang Shumin, a native of Shunyi, Beijing, came to leiming village in 1962 and became a local substitute teacher. In 1972, he became a public teacher. In 1993, Liang Shumin retired and lived with his wife.

For four years, Mr. Liang has been on duty alone in leiming village primary school, treating the children as their 'grandchildren'. In addition to teaching, he also takes care of their lives. Liang Shumin's expectation now is that someone will take over, so as not to let a child lose the opportunity to receive education.
