It marks the formal opening and operation of the Golmud Dunhuang railway and the formation of the first ring railway network in Northwest China, adding a 'new engine' to the economic and social development of Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Tibet provinces and regions and poverty alleviation in the areas along the line.

The construction of Golmud Dunhuang railway started in 2013. It starts from Liugou station of Lanzhou Xinjiang Railway in the north, passes through Dunhuang, Aksai and Subei, crosses Qilian Mountains and enters Qinghai Province. Along Mahai and Dachaidan, it leads to yinmaxia station of SiGe section of Qinghai Tibet railway, with a total length of 671km, including 509km of newly-built line and 152 km of existing SiGe section of Qinghai Tibet railway.

Golmud Dunhuang railway is a grade I electrified single track railway of national railway, with double track conditions reserved. The designed speed of passenger train is 120 km / h, the traction weight is 4000 T, and the long-term transport capacity will reach 36 million tons of freight per year. Golmud Dunhuang railway includes Liugou Dunhuang section, Dunhuang Subei section, Mahai yinmaxia section and Subei Mahai section. The newly opened section from Subei to Mahai, with a total length of 173 km, was built in April 2013. Six new stations, namely dabahe, heishigou, changcaogou, dangjinshan, Sugan lake and saishitengshan, were built.

One belt, one road, is the major project of the Golmud to Dunhuang railway. The opening and operation of Golmud Dunhuang railway connects Lanzhou Xinjiang Railway and Qinghai Tibet railway, forming a new ring railway network in Northwest China. It will effectively promote the development of resources along the line, prosper the economy of ethnic areas, improve the road network layout, and provide strong transport capacity support for the high-quality development of the western region.

Sun Yongning, deputy general manager of China Railway Qinghai Tibet Group Co., Ltd., said that after the Golmud Dunhuang railway was put into operation, the railway traffic between Xinjiang and Tibet would no longer bypass Lanzhou, and its transportation distance would be shortened by at least 1100 km, which changed the circuitous history of railway transportation between Xinjiang, Tibet and even Central Asian countries, and opened a convenient railway channel for railway passenger and freight transportation in the areas along the line 。 At the same time, the Golmud Dunhuang railway will become the second International Corridor from northwest to Central Asia after it joins with the Kuge railway to be built soon.
