Canalys: Global smartphone shipments of Q3 in 2019: 352.4 million

On November 1, canalys, a market research company, released a report on the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2019. The global smartphone market grew for the first time in two years in the third quarter of 2019.

Global smartphone shipments rose 1% in the third quarter of 2019, breaking away from two consecutive years of decline, a series of market stimulus measures aimed at boosting demand, the report said. Among them, the global total shipment volume is 352.4 million, compared with 348.9 million in the same period last year, an increase of 1% year on year. Although the data is not big, it is the first time in recent two years to achieve growth.

Samsung still ranks first in terms of shipment volume, with 78.9 million units, up 11% year-on-year. Its strategy of sacrificing operating profit to pursue market share has gained attraction.

Huawei rebounded from its sluggish second quarter with sales of 66.8 million units, up 29%, as pent up channel demand led to a surge in shipments.

Apple came third, with shipments down 7% to 43.5 million, mainly due to the poor performance of the iPhone's XRS, XS and XS Max ahead of the September launch. However, the number exceeded expectations as apple first released three iPhones in September.

Xiaomi and oppo are in the top five with shipments of 32.5 million and 32 million, respectively.

"5g is Samsung's next battleground," said rushabh Doshi, research director at canalys. "Samsung is one of the few smartphone suppliers that designs its own chipsets and modems. Therefore, it is not limited to the innovation cycle of third-party component suppliers such as Qualcomm. If Samsung develops faster than Qualcomm, it can win the competition of 5g middle end smart phones. Its recently announced Galaxy a90 5g and the upcoming exynos 980 chipset highlight its strategic priorities. '

"Huawei is not out of the woods yet," said Ben Stanton, a senior analyst at canalys. 'its overseas shipments in the third quarter focused on the physical pre list models, of which p30lite is the best one, nearly 3 million. However, the subsequent sanctions, such as mate 30, brought uncertainty because the possibility of channels in key overseas markets such as Europe supporting Huawei devices without Google mobile services is not objective. If the political situation changes, Huawei does have the potential to quickly bring GMS into its equipment, but the time is not on Huawei's side. New Y-series and P-Series equipment will be launched in early 2020. These series are the main sales drivers of Huawei, accounting for 64% of its sales in the first half of this year. If the entity list event is not resolved in the coming months, maintaining its overseas sales volume will be a major challenge. '

Vincent thielke, research analyst at canalys, said: 'the iPhone 11 has been launched and received good reviews. "It's a real improvement in camera and battery life, and its adoption of the same discounts as the iPhone's XRS is a popular reason for consumers. However, apple devices do not have 5g. It will miss carriers' huge investment in 5g marketing and promotion, and broad expectations that Apple will launch the 5g iPhone in September 2020 may persuade some customers to postpone purchases to make sure their devices are not out of date. Apple will need an unconventional strategy to keep sales high early next year, which makes the rumour that Apple will launch an entry-level iPhone in the first half of 2020 not surprising. '
