In the process of expanding domestic demand in recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the consumption function of cities, and the driving effect of consumption on economic development has become increasingly prominent. Cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, have made great efforts in night economy. By the end of 2021, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Commerce will issue a series of measures to meet the requirements of the city's economic growth and promote the 'night life' of Beijing. What about the consumption power of the major cities?
The total retail sales of social consumer goods (hereinafter referred to as "total social consumption") is an important reference index to measure a city's consumption power. According to the relevant data of 40 major cities, the top 10 cities with the most consumption power in 2018 are Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Overall, the growth rate of total social consumption in North China and Northeast China is relatively slow.
Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou ranked first among the three provincial capitals
According to the data of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of statistics, in 2018, the total amount of social consumption in Shanghai reached 1266.869 billion yuan, an increase of 7.9% over the previous year. Among them, non store retail sales reached 192.599 billion yuan, an increase of 13.8%. The retail sales of online stores reached 150.670 billion yuan, up 15.8%, accounting for 11.9% of the total social consumption.
During the same period, Beijing's total social consumption reached 1174.77 billion yuan, an increase of 2.7%. From the national point of view, only Shanghai and Beijing have a total social consumption of more than one trillion yuan, far ahead of the country. As a strong first tier city, Beijing and Shanghai are truly the national central cities, which have the strongest radiation driving ability to the whole country. On the other hand, the modern service industry and high-income industry in Beijing and Shanghai are the most concentrated, so consumption is naturally more.
After Beijing and Shanghai, Guangzhou in South China ranks third with 925.6 billion yuan, and is also the next city whose total social consumption is likely to exceed the trillion mark. In recent years, although there is a certain gap between Guangzhou and Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen in terms of Internet and financial industry, as a millennium business capital, Guangzhou is still the center of Commerce, transportation, logistics, education and medical treatment in South China, with a large number of professional wholesale markets and a high degree of consumer centrality.
After the top three, Chongqing ranked fourth with 877 billion yuan of total social consumption. However, the total population of Chongqing is more than 30 million, which is equivalent to a medium-sized province. Therefore, if only the main urban area is considered, there is still a big gap between Chongqing and Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Then came Wuhan and Chengdu, with total social consumption of 684.39 billion yuan and 680.18 billion yuan respectively. As a first tier city, Shenzhen only ranks seventh, with a total social consumption of 616.89 billion yuan, and the gap with the top cities is still widening.
Peng Peng, vice president of Guangdong Institute of economic reform, told the reporter of China first finance and economics that the local consumption power of a city is an important support for the local consumption, but the consumption attraction to the surrounding areas is also very important, and the latter will enlarge the social consumption scale of the city to a great extent. Hong Kong is recognized as an international consumer center. Shenzhen is close to Hong Kong, so it is very convenient to go shopping in and out of Hong Kong. Therefore, many local people in Shenzhen will go shopping in Hong Kong, resulting in a considerable part of consumption outflow.
On the other hand, as a non provincial capital city, Shenzhen is not as attractive to the surrounding areas as Wuhan and Chengdu. Peng Peng said that Wuhan is the thoroughfare of nine provinces. Hanzheng Street has always been a famous shopping center with a well-developed professional market. Wuhan has a strong consumer attraction to the surrounding areas.
