Why did the Hualian 6.7 earthquake in Taiwan feel strong in Nanjing, more than 1000 kilometers away?

China Seismological Network officially determined that at 13:01 on April 18, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in Hualian County, Taiwan (24.02 n, 121.65 E), with a focal depth of 24 km. After the Taiwan earthquake, netizens in Xiamen, Fuzhou, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places felt the earth shaking almost at the same time. What are the effects of the earthquake? Why is Nanjing, more than 1000 kilometers away from Taiwan Hualien, still experiencing a strong earthquake?

At about 13:50, @ Nanjing released the news: according to the Municipal Seismological Bureau, affected by the Taiwan earthquake, part of Nanjing felt the earthquake, mainly concentrated in Jianye District, Zhujiang Road, Pukou high tech Zone and other high-rise building areas, not the Nanjing earthquake. Around 14:03, @ Nanjing earthquake prevention and mitigation also released a micro blog message to confirm.

Experts from Jiangsu Provincial Seismological Bureau told the modern express that after the earthquake, they continued to receive phone calls, and citizens in Suzhou, Taizhou, Nantong, Nanjing and other places also said they felt the earthquake.

Nanjing: the high-rise earthquake will be more obvious

The first one detected was Gaochun's seismic network. After that, the Nanjing earthquake bureau's telephone rang, and the citizens called one after another for consultation.

Why is Nanjing more than 1000 kilometers away from Taiwan's Hualien, and it still feels strong? Experts from Nanjing Seismological Bureau explained that the seismic waves are divided into P waves and S waves. P wave is a longitudinal wave, which will shake up and down, with relatively fast propagation speed. However, Nanjing is 1070km away from Kaohsiung, and the longitudinal seismic wave is attenuated and transmitted. By the time of arriving in Nanjing, it is very small. The S wave is a transverse wave, which is relatively slow in transmission. When arriving in Nanjing, it has a certain intensity, and the citizens will feel the shaking. In this Taiwan earthquake, the most sensitive buildings in Nanjing are the high-rise buildings in Hexi, Daxing palace and Xinjiekou, especially those above the 10th floor. Experts said that although the order of arrival of the earthquake wave around Nanjing is Liyang Gaochun Jintan Lishui Jiangning Zhenjiang, due to the geological and high-rise building relationship, this time the earthquake was felt in Hexi, Xinjiekou and some high-rise buildings in Pukou.

Experts said that Hexi and Xinjiekou have one common feature: the foundation is relatively soft. The west of the river is mainly the flood plain geology of the Yangtze River, while the Xinjiekou and daxinggong areas are mainly the ancient channel geology of the Qinhuai River. After the earthquake wave came, the two tall buildings also shook slightly. However, even if there is a sense of earthquake, the public need not be too nervous, because this kind of far away earthquake will not cause damage to our buildings here. Experts said that the earthquake sense of the high-rise buildings in Hexi and Xinjiekou does not mean that the earthquake resistance of these two places is relatively weak. The hard geological conditions will have a sense of the high-frequency waves and the near earthquakes, while the soft geological conditions will have a sense of the medium strong earthquakes with a long distance and strong magnitude. If there is an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 or more in Taiwan, there will be a feeling here in Nanjing, especially in the places with dense high buildings and soft strata.

Wuxi: many citizens run downstairs in fear

At around 1:35 p.m. on April 18, there was an obvious movement, which made many Wuxi citizens feel as if they were turning around. A citizen taking a lunch break said that since all the people around him ran downstairs, they followed him downstairs to avoid. I was taking a nap. They suddenly said that Lou Huang was there, and then they all came out, and I came out.

It turns out that while citizens in Wuxi felt shaking, Hualien, Taiwan, suffered a magnitude 6.7 earthquake. Later, the reporter of Modern Express contacted the Seismological Bureau of Wuxi City by telephone, but the telephone was still in the middle of the call.

Changzhou: dizzy

At about 2:00 p.m. on April 18, Ms. Chen, who works in the government of Xinbei District, Changzhou City, told the modern express that she was working in the office on the 20th floor at that time, when she suddenly felt dizzy, the whole person also shook back and forth. At first, I thought I was dizzy after watching the computer for a long time. About 20 seconds later, I heard someone outside shouting for an earthquake. Then my colleagues in the office also shouted for dizziness. After the earthquake, I realized it was an earthquake. Ms. Chen said that at that time, there were still many people running to the vacant lot downstairs.

Others said that when I was working in Wujin Wanda, I first heard the quack sound, and then fainted badly. I thought it was caused by fatigue. It was not until the curtains were shaking and colleagues felt the shaking that they were convinced of the earthquake. Later, there was a lot of noise outside the door, and many people rushed down the stairs.

Suzhou: running down from the 16th floor, my legs are soft. I thought I was dizzy at first, said a cat named April. The 20th floor of Suzhou feels shaking. Running down from the 16th floor, my legs are soft & hellip; & hellip; it is understood that most of the citizens who reflect the earthquake are located on the high-rise buildings. The tremor in the high-rise building was obvious, and I went down the stairs. One citizen said. In the video, there is only one high-rise building, and many people run downstairs to avoid danger.
