What is the legend of Longmen Grottoes?

It is said that in ancient times, there was a vast lake in the south of Luoyang, surrounded by green mountains and lush grass. People graze on the mountain, fish in the lake and live a peaceful life. There is a hard-working child in the village who goes to the mountain to herd sheep every day. He often hears the strange sound of "cannot be opened" coming from the underground. When he gets home, he tells his mother about it. When his mother thought about it, she told him that if she heard it again, she would answer: "open!" but he didn't know it was over. The sky broke and the Longmen Mountain split from the middle. The surging lake water poured out of the gap and roared around Luoyang City and flowed thousands of miles to the East China Sea. After the flow of water, countless clear springs burst out of the cliff and stone, and they were stored as fragrant pools and flowed into waterfalls. On the cliffs of the two mountains, there are countless honeycomb like grottoes. The grottoes are full of statues, some of which are beautiful, some of which are not clear-cut, and many of which are spectacular. Since then, Longmen Grottoes have become famous all over the world.

In fact, Longmen Grottoes have their own historical reasons, but this myth and legend reflects the rich imagination of the ancient working people, and also praises the wonderful carving art of Longmen Grottoes.

Longmen is located 13 kilometers south of Luoyang City on the Yishui river. Here, two mountains are facing each other. Yishui is flowing in the middle. It looks like a gate que, so it was called "yique" in ancient times. The verses left by the poets are excellent portraits of "interrupting the sky, chiseling the mountains to guide the flow of Iraq" and "towering two mountain gates, strangling a water show". It is also called "Longmen" because it is located in the south of the capital city of the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Bai Juyi, a poet of Tang Dynasty, once said: 'the victory of the four suburbs of Luodu is the head of Longmen'. Since ancient times, 'Longmen Mountain' has been regarded as the first of eight scenic spots in Luoyang, and it is the best scenic spot in Luoyang. Since ancient times, yique has been an important place for transportation and strategists, and also a gateway and barrier to the south of Luoyang in ancient times. Longmen Grottoes scenic area is mainly composed of Longmen Grottoes, Xiangshan temple and Baiyuan. These scenic spots or green mountains and clear waters, winding paths and secluded; or strange peaks and rocks, flowing springs and waterfalls, make many tourists linger. It is a national scenic spot.

Longmen Grottoes, Dunhuang Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes are the three largest Grottoes in China. In 1961, the State Council announced that Longmen Grottoes are the national key cultural relics protection units.

On November 30, 2000, it was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. In 2001, it was rated as 4A tourist area by the National Tourism Administration. The eastern and western mountains of Longmen are the 'Paleozoic' limestone in geological history. The stone is hard and not easy to be weathered, which is suitable for fine carving. It is also the political, economic and cultural center of the whole country because it is close to the capital of Wei, Sui and Tang Dynasties. The economy is developed, the transportation is convenient, the mountain is natural, the scenery is beautiful, and the climate is warm. In the Northern Wei, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Buddhism was worshipped and built, and Buddhism developed rapidly. Luoyang was once long As the center of Buddhist activities, Longmen statues came into being. It was founded in the Northern Wei Dynasty (about A.D. 3), after the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the Western Wei Dynasty, the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Northern Zhou Dynasty, the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and the Northern Song Dynasty, with a digging time of more than 400 years. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 2300 niches, more than 110000 statues, more than 70 pagodas, and more than 2800 inscriptions. The largest Buddha is 17.14 meters high and the smallest is only 2 centimeters. These niches of different sizes are like beehives, which are densely distributed on the cliffs of the East and West Mountains. They stretch for more than 1000 meters from north to south, with a large number and a high artistic level, which is amazing.

The art of Longmen Grottoes shows the characteristics of the integration of Indian culture and Chinese culture. It was formed by the migration of Luoyang, the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the integration and collision of Luoyang and the advanced and profound Han culture of the Southern Dynasties. Therefore, from the beginning, it has the trend of secularization and Sinicization. It is different from the grotto art in the west, the north and the southwest.
