The main characteristics of Henan are:

1. Climate characteristics: most of Henan Province is located in the warm temperate zone, with the south across the subtropical zone. It belongs to the continental monsoon climate of transition from the north subtropical zone to the warm temperate zone. At the same time, it also has the characteristics of transition from the east to the West from the plain to the hills and mountains, with four distinct seasons, the same period of rain and heat, complex diversity and frequent meteorological disasters.

2. Characteristics of water resources: most of the rivers in Henan Province originate from the west, northwest and Southeast. There are more than 1500 main rivers crisscross in Henan Province, including 493 rivers with a drainage area of more than 100 square kilometers. Henan is the core water source, main water receiving area and the head of the main canal project of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which is the key national water conservancy project. Since its opening, the annual average water receiving capacity of Henan section has reached 870 million cubic meters.

3. Ethnic characteristics: by the end of 2013, the minority population of Henan Province was about 1.45 million, accounting for 1.38% of the total population of the province. Among them, there are about 1.24 million Hui, 91500 Mongolians and 75800 Manchus. The population of ethnic minorities in Henan Province is distributed in 158 counties (cities and districts) of the province, which is characterized by large dispersion and small concentration.

4. Dialect characteristics: Henan dialect directly inherits the development of grammar, vocabulary and phonetic system of ancient Chinese common language, and has strong internal consistency. The syntactic structure in the grammar is quite consistent in the vast number of counties and cities, but the morphology is slightly different. The basic words in vocabulary, especially the root words, are basically the same, but there are some differences in pronunciation, and some of the non basic words are more obvious.

5. Agricultural characteristics: China's early agricultural civilization originated in Henan Province. The early farming culture in the Central Plains included many farming techniques and scientific inventions. Many tools of agricultural production were unearthed in Peiligang's cultural remains, which provided evidence for the early developed farming civilization in the Central Plains. Zhuye (Huxiang Town, Zhecheng Town, Shangqiu today), the capital of the state of Chen, the capital of Zhu Xiang, the emperor of Yan, created the early developed agricultural civilization in the Central Plains.
