The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional folk festival of the Han nationality, which began in the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, and later became the common festival of the Han nationality and ethnic minorities. "Duan" and "Chu" are synonymous, and "Wu" and "Wu" are interlinked.

Folklorists believe that the Dragon Boat Festival originated from the totem worship of the ancient Yue people, such as inserting AI Pu, drinking realgar, hanging sachets, eliminating disasters and evil, which are all the original epidemic prevention of public health.

However, it has been handed down from generation to generation that the dragon boat festival commemorates Qu Yuan's suicide in the river. Dragon boat is to find Qu Yuan in the water, zongzi is to sacrifice Qu Yuan's soul, and Qu Yuan is the symbol of suffering of Chinese intellectuals.

Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), a nobleman of Chu state in the Warring States period, was a gifted man who assisted King Huai. Qin and Chu fought for supremacy. "The emperor of Qin was in the horizontal position, and the king of Chu was in the vertical position.". Qu Yuan advocated uniting Qi against Qin. King Huai believed in slander, exiled Qu Yuan, allied with Qin, was captured by Qin, and died in Qin. King Qingxiang ascended the throne, continued to pro Qin, and exiled Qu Yuan again. Qu Yuan was in exile. He traveled to Yuanxiang, mourning and remembering, and witnessing the subjugation of his country. Qin general Bai Qi broke the capital of Ying and destroyed the state of Chu. Qu Yuan was in agony and drowned himself in the Miluo River. He died for his country on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in the summer calendar (278 BC).

Qu Yuan's death shocked the soul of Chinese intellectuals. The Dragon Boat Festival has developed from a festival commemorating Qu Yuan's suffering to a festival respecting knowledge and liberating intellectuals after two thousand three hundred years.

To cherish the memory of ancient times is to educate today. Confucian education attaches importance to "learning from history". The history of China, from the oracle bone inscriptions, has three thousand three hundred years of written records. In commemorating the Dragon Boat Festival, we naturally associate Qu Yuan's sufferings with Qin Shihuang's burning books and burying Confucianism, literary inquisition of past dynasties, and the recent anti rightist movement.

In 213 BC, the first emperor of Qin ordered the burning of historical records of other countries except Qin Ji, and those who talked about poems and books were executed. Those who did not belong to the present were exterminated, private schools were forbidden, and officials were teachers. In the next year, more than 460 scholars died in Xianyang. Chinese society has been stagnated for thousands of years because of the autocratic tyrants of the past dynasties, who imprison their thoughts and put them in prison. The recent anti rightist movement and the cultural revolution made the theory of "useless knowledge" and "more knowledge, more reactionary" rampant, harming the country and people. The passing of Tian Han, the sinking of Lao She, the disappearance of Chu Anping, and the destruction of a generation of intellectual elites are all historical lessons that we should learn forever -- this is the significance of commemorating the Dragon Boat Festival.
