However, it is still difficult to clarify the population structure of giant pandas in the wild.
According to relevant experts, the population structure of animals is mainly composed of population density, age, sex ratio, birth rate and mortality. In 2017, Chengdu Research Base of giant panda breeding, together with Nanyang Technological University of Singapore and Sichuan Normal University, carried out research on giant panda individual recognition technology using image analysis. In the past two years, a database of more than 120000 images and tens of thousands of video clips has been built, and nearly 10000 images have been marked, segmented and annotated.
Through this database, automatic face detection and individual recognition of captive giant pandas are realized. Among them, the paper 'giant panda face recognition using small database' (Chinese name 'giant panda individual recognition based on small data set') was employed by ICIP 2019 (2019 IEEE International Conference on image processing).
Using this data, giant panda experts specially launched a 'face recognition' app. Through the unique feature data of giant panda's face, through database analysis and comparison, the accurate recognition of giant panda can be realized. The algorithm is superior to the five most advanced neural network deep learning methods (alexnet, googlenet, resnet-50, vgg-16 and VGg face).
At that time, giant panda fans only need to scan the giant panda's face through the mobile app to get the basic information of the individual giant panda.
