Special type of work refers to underground, high altitude, high temperature, especially heavy manual labor and other work harmful to health. The scope of special type of work is determined by the competent departments or labor departments of various industries. Special type of work is not a formal concept, but a conventional term. So laws and regulations have no formal definition of it.
The latest regulations on retirement age for special types of work:
The statutory retirement age refers to the retirement age stipulated in the Interim Measures of the State Council for the resettlement of the elderly, the weak, the sick and the disabled cadres and the Interim Measures of the State Council for the retirement and resignation of workers (GF  No. 104) approved by the second session of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress. That is: workers in enterprises, institutions, party and government organs and mass organizations owned by the whole people:
（1） A male has reached the age of 60 or a female has reached the age of 50 and has served continuously for at least 10 years;
（2） Men over 55 years old and women over 45 years old who have worked continuously for at least 10 years are engaged in underground, high altitude, high temperature, especially heavy manual labor or other work harmful to health;
（3） If the male has reached the age of 50 and the female has reached the age of 45, and has worked continuously for at least 10 years, and has been certified by the hospital and confirmed by the labor appraisal committee, he shall be allowed to retire.
Procedures for early retirement of special types of work:
（1） Those who require early retirement according to the special type of work shall submit a written application for early retirement to their unit (or archives agency) before the 10th of each month, and provide the name of the special type of work, the specific duration of employment and the original information that can prove the special type of work they are engaged in.
（2） The unit or employee archives trusteeship organization shall review the application reasons, types of work, specific duration of employment and original data submitted by individuals in combination with personal archives, and publicize the age, types of work, working hours, years of engaging in special types of work and other basic information of early retirees, with a publicity period of five days.
（3） Before the 20th of each month, the unit or employee archives trusteeship institution shall submit the list of early retirement, personal archives and supplementary materials to the county human resources and Social Security Bureau for review and summary, and submit them to the municipal human resources and Social Security Bureau for approval before the 25th of each month.
（4） The Municipal Bureau of human resources and social security is specifically responsible for examining and approving the early retirement of special types of work in the whole city. The examination and approval is implemented once a month, and the basic pension is calculated and issued from the next month after the examination and approval.
（5） For those who do not meet the conditions for early retirement, the county human resources and Social Security Bureau shall return their personal files to the original unit or employee file trusteeship institution before the 10th day of the next month after the approval of the Municipal Bureau, and briefly explain the reasons for not meeting the requirements. （6） The unit or employee archives trusteeship organization shall inform the applicant of the examination and approval situation and the reasons for non conformity within 10 days.
