There are many kinds of social apps that we can use, and there are many types of dating. We don't rule out these dating software, and we don't refuse their existence, but they should have their own rules, especially for the protection of minors. Recently, it has been reported that three dating apps have been taken off the shelves abroad. What's the matter? Let's have a look!
What's going on when three dating apps are off the shelves
In the afternoon of May 7, according to CNBC, the US financial website, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said today that apple and Google have removed three dating apps from their respective app stores.
The three apps, meet24, fastmeet and meet4u, are all operated by wildec, which is headquartered in Ukraine. FTC has previously said that the three apps allow children under the age of 13 to register and use.
In a statement, the FTC warned wildec that the apps violated the children's Online Privacy Protection Act (Coppa), which requires businesses to obtain parental consent before collecting or using personal information from children under 13, and the FTC Act, which prohibits unfair practices that could cause significant harm to consumers.
According to FTC, the three apps operated by wildec require users to provide details such as birthdays, e-mails and photos when they create accounts, as well as collect users' real-time location data. Although the privacy terms of these apps stipulate that users must be over 13 years old, they do not prevent users under 13 years old from accessing them.
Allow minors to use by off shelf app
What's worse, even if users show that they are minors, other adult users can still contact them through these apps. FTC believes that these adult users who contact minors may face criminal charges.
In the warning statement, the FTC asked wildec to immediately delete the personal information of children on its app. At the same time, the FTC issued a consumer warning that children should get their parents' approval before downloading the new version of the app.
Apple and Google have yet to comment.
