In April 2008, with the consent of the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, youth day is applicable to young people aged 14 to 28. More than 300 million young people will have half a day off on May 4 every year.

According to the State Council's "national holidays for new year's festivals and anniversaries," Youth Day (May 4) is a half day holiday for young people over 14 years old. However, this provision does not specify the upper age limit for people who are eligible for the holiday.

After further clarifying the age limit, more than 300 million young people aged between 14 and 28 will be able to enjoy a half day holiday on Youth Day in accordance with the law and feel the care of the society for young people.

According to the measures, all departments and employers should consciously abide by the provisions of the measures for holidays on national new year's festivals and anniversaries, so as to effectively protect the right of young people to take holidays.

The origin of May 4th Youth Day

On May 4, 1919, in order to protest against the imperialist countries' support for Japan's aggression against China at the Paris peace conference, young students in Beijing held a massive demonstration, which eventually developed into a patriotic movement against imperialism and feudalism participated by the whole nation. The May 4th movement showed the strong will of the Chinese people to defend national independence and fight for democracy and freedom, marking the beginning of China's new democratic revolution.

It was in 1939, when the 20th anniversary of the May 4th Movement was commemorated, that the two camps of modern China's evaluation of the May 4th Movement was made public.

On the eve of the May 4th Movement in 1939, the Youth Federation of Yan'an issued an initiative to the youth of the whole country to designate the May 4th movement as China Youth Day, which was agreed by the youth organizations all over the country. At first, the government of the Republic of China didn't agree, but later it was forced to agree.

Soon, they found this rule very dangerous, so they changed March 29 to Youth Day (the day when Huanghuagang uprising and 72 martyrs died on the eve of 1911 Revolution).

However, the border region government under the leadership of the Communist Party has always regarded the May 4th movement as youth day. In December 1949, the Administrative Council of the Central People's government officially declared May 4th as youth day, or "5.4 Youth Day" for short.
