The origin of Lantern Festival

the lantern festival

The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China, which existed as early as 2000 years ago in the Western Han Dynasty. The Lantern Festival began in the period of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Emperor Ming advocated Buddhism. It was said that Buddhism had the practice of monks observing Buddhist relics on the 15th day of the first month and lighting lamps to worship the Buddha, so they ordered that on this night, they would light lamps in the Imperial Palace and temples to worship the Buddha, and that the scholars and ordinary people would hang lamps. Later, this kind of Buddhist Etiquette Festival gradually formed a grand folk festival. The festival experienced a development process from the palace to the folk, from the Central Plains to the whole country.

In the reign of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, the 15th day of the first month was designated as the Lantern Festival. During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the sacrifice of Taiyi God was set on the 15th day of the first month. (1) the God who rules everything in the universe. When Sima Qian founded the "Taichu calendar", he had identified the Lantern Festival as a major festival.

Another theory is that the custom of lighting lanterns in Lantern Festival originated from Taoism's "three yuan theory"; the 15th day of the first month is Shangyuan Festival, the 15th day of July is Zhongyuan Festival, and the 15th day of October is Xiayuan Festival. In charge of the three yuan, they are heaven, earth and people. The heaven officials are happy, so the Lantern Festival should be lit.

The festival period and customs of Lantern Festival are extended and expanded with the development of history. In terms of the length of the festival, it was only one day in the Han Dynasty, three days in the Tang Dynasty, and five days in the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the lights were lit from the eighth day of the first month to the 17th night of the first month, for ten days. Connected with the Spring Festival, the city is busy in the daytime and lights at night. Especially the exquisite and colorful lights make it the climax of entertainment activities during the Spring Festival. In the Qing Dynasty, there were more "hundred plays" such as dragon dance, lion dance, roller boat running, stilt walking and Yangko dancing, but the festival period was shortened to four to five days.
