When do tortoises usually Hibernate? Do tortoises need food for hibernation

Tortoises are also animals that need to hibernate. Generally, tortoises will begin to hibernate around October. So what precautions do tortoises need during hibernation? Let's get to know.

When does the tortoise hibernate

The time is different in different places, generally around October, but the point is to see the temperature.

When the temperature drops below 13 ℃, the tortoise begins to hibernate. During the whole winter, the head and tail of the tortoise are all retracted into the shell, with their eyes closed tightly, and they do not eat, move or excrete until they hibernate. If the environment is not timely, it is difficult to enter. The hibernation temperature of tortoise is suitable at 1-10 ℃. Higher than 10 ℃ is easy to cause the recovery of tortoise, so as to consume physical strength, and cause the decline of tortoise's physique, which is not conducive to growth and reproduction in the next year. Repeated hibernation and awakening during a hibernation period can also cause turtle death. If the temperature is lower than 0 ℃, the tortoise will be frostbitten or even killed. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the possible temperature change when setting the hibernation place of tortoise.

Three ways for tortoises to hibernate

1. Slime hibernation:

Although it looks a little dirty, for tortoises, mud is their favorite. First of all, the soil rich in probiotics has a very good auxiliary effect on the treatment of decayed skin and rotten nails. Compared with the traditional hibernation with clear water, the turtle hibernating in the mud will not rot its skin, but the decayed skin before hibernation can recover itself after a winter ~! This method is also the closest to the hibernation of the tortoise in the wild, and the dilute mud has a better thermostatic effect than water. It is suitable for all kinds of turtles and semi turtles.

Operation method:

1) Take a strong turnover box and dig some soil in the garden. Try to dig as much as possible rather than less

2) Pick up the weeds and stones in the soil, and crush the large pieces of soil

3) Add water and mud to ensure that the soil can fully absorb water and turn into mud. At the same time, remove dead grass and other debris floating on the water surface. The water surface is 1-2cm higher than the mud surface

4) After the mud settles, put the box in the dark and then put it into the turtle. Generally, the turtle will drill into the mud after a day or two of tossing

PS: do not add medicine to the soil for disinfection during the use of slime method. It is recommended to use the soil near camphor tree. Pay attention to the change of water level at ordinary times and replenish water once a month.

2. Water sand method:

This method is the same as the thin mud method, but the effect of sand is not as good as mud. It's hard for tortoises to drill in, but the sand is cleaner than mud. Generally, this method is only used for tortoises with strong physique such as crocodile tortoise and musk with razor. The approach is also simple:

1) Find a clean container

2) placing sand.

3) Wash the sand with water and add 2-3 drops of iodophor (the water surface of adult crocodile turtle is 5cm higher than the sand surface)

4) Put the container in the shade and put the turtle in it. This year's three alligator seedlings, when the outside temperature drops to about 10 degrees, they will drill to the bottom of the sand without leaving any trace.

3. Coconut soil Law:

This method is equivalent to the dry version of the slime method. It takes advantage of the loose coconut soil, which is easy for turtles to drill in. It is cleaner and easier to clean than the slime method. However, it needs to spray water frequently to ensure the humidity. This method is most suitable for semi turtles. Of course, turtles can also use it when the humidity is high.

1) Pour coconut soil into a clean container and mix with Iodophor for disinfection. Sun exposure for 1-2 weeks (PS: the packaging of lifeblood, coconut smell is not normal, it needs more sun exposure for several days)

2) Put in the turtle after drying.

3) When the tortoises are buried in the soil and hibernate, they can be covered with another layer of bark (moss is not recommended, it is easy to get moldy)

Moisture determination of coconut soil: grasp a handful of coconut soil by hand, and the moisture that does not loose after kneading is just right. The explanation that can't be pinched is too dry. Generally, in dry areas, soil should be watered and humidified every week. As for the water back method I don't recommend, the water quality is not good, this method is easy to get rotten skin and white eyes. Before hibernation, tortoise should do a good job in disinfection and prevention, soak once yellow powder water or iodophor diluent to disinfect the whole body.

Finally, it is emphasized that the hibernating turtles should be placed in the north corner of the house which is cool, dark and airless. Check the tortoise's condition once a month. Don't disturb the tortoise in hibernation often
