How is sunscreen polluting the swimming pool? How does sunscreen affect water quality?

In Japan, there are different opinions on whether sunscreen can be applied in public swimming pools. Sunscreen is a kind of sunscreen that many people must use in summer. What's the effect on water quality?

In an interview with 20 cities, Japan's Daily News learned that half of the cities banned sunscreen use and then went into the water because of concerns about water pollution. On the other hand, some experts pointed out that 'sunscreen does not have a bad impact on water quality'.

Only one of the nine municipal swimming pools in Chiba City requires that sunscreen be cleaned before going into the water, but it is allowed to apply sunscreen on the bank, and the other eight swimming pools prohibit the use of sunscreen. However, citizens are allowed to use sunscreen in the water this summer as they comment on the mayor's Twitter that they want to review the policy. After inspection, the water quality of the pool has not been affected since it was opened at the end of June.

However, there are still many cities that are concerned about water pollution and forbid people from using sunscreen to get into the water. So, will sunscreen have a bad impact on water quality?

In 2007, the Osaka society of Dermatology investigated the swimming pools of 14 schools in Osaka. There is no difference in six water quality standards, such as the residual chlorine concentration, between the school swimming pool that is prohibited to use sunscreen and the school swimming pool that is allowed to use sunscreen. Therefore, the Medical Association concluded that the use of sunscreen is no problem if it is tested, managed and added with new water regularly. In addition, the Japanese Society of clinical dermatology and the Japanese Society of pediatric dermatology reached the same conclusion.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of education, science and technology, the school health care manual made by the Japanese school Insurance Regulatory Commission has also changed. From 'sunscreen is the cause of water pollution' in 2009 to 'recommended sunscreen for children and students to prevent sunburn'.
