New drugs from HKU can eliminate HIV worldwide

4hw.com.cn, April 26, the University of Hong Kong announced that the AIDS Research Institute of its medical college has developed a new antibody drug (biia-sg), which has been successfully tested in mice. Is it in the future, AIDS will become an area that can be conquered.

According to reports, the drug can strategically ambush HIV and protect cells from infection. In addition, the gene introduced biia-sg can continue to play a role in mice, and clear the cells that have been infected with HIV.

The research team led by the Institute of AIDS, Department of Microbiology, Hong Kong University Medical College, has developed a new antibody drug, biia-sg, by using genetic engineering technology, which can effectively inhibit all tested HIV strains and promote the elimination of latent infected cells in mice.

According to the HKU research team, biia-sg can strategically ambush HIV and protect cells from infection by binding to CD4 protein on the surface of host cells. In addition, the gene introduced biia-sg can continue to play a role in mice, and clear the cells that have been infected with HIV. Therefore, this study provides a proof of concept for biia-sg as a new antibody drug for HIV prevention and immunotherapy.

Compared with the current anti HIV drugs, the effectiveness of the new drugs has improved significantly. The research team hopes that the new drugs will become the first "made in Hong Kong" anti HIV drugs suitable for clinical treatment.

This research result has been published in the latest issue of the international famous biomedical journal Clinical research.
