On May 1, 1886, more than 200000 workers in Chicago held a general strike for the implementation of the eight hour working system. After a hard and bloody struggle, they finally won the victory. In order to commemorate the workers' movement, on July 14, 1889, the socialist congress convened by Marxists from all over the world was solemnly opened in Paris, France. At the conference, the participants unanimously agreed to make May 1 a common festival for the international proletariat. This resolution has received a positive response from workers all over the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class of European and American countries took the lead in taking to the streets, holding grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legitimate rights and interests. Since then, the working people from all over the world have gathered and marched to celebrate every day.
The celebration of labor day by the Chinese people dates back to 1918. In that year, some revolutionary intellectuals in Shanghai, Suzhou and other places distributed leaflets introducing the May 1st movement to the masses. On May 1, 1920, workers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities took to the streets to hold a huge March and assembly. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, may day was made a legal labor day in December 1949.
