Yu Guangzhong was born in Nanjing on October 21, 1928, and studied in Chongqing middle school during the Anti Japanese war. He first studied in Nanjing University and Xiamen University, and then graduated from the Department of foreign languages of Taiwan University. In 1959, he received the master of Arts from Iowa University. He was a professor in the Department of foreign languages at Taipei Normal University and the University of political science. He taught in the Department of Chinese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1974 to 1985. After 1985, he settled in Kaohsiung and taught in Zhongshan University. Last year, he retired.

In his early years, Yu Guangzhong was a member of the blue star Poetry Society in Taiwan's new poetry schools. He wrote more than 50 kinds of new poems, essays, reviews, translations, editors, etc. many of his works were selected into university and middle school textbooks in three places on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He settled in Kaohsiung before his death.

Yu Guangzhong is good at poetry, prose, comment and translation, calling himself "four dimensional space", and has published more than 60 special books. Poems such as homesickness, four rhymes of homesickness, essays such as listening to the cold rain, my four imaginary enemies, etc. are widely included in Chinese Textbooks of mainland China and Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Since 1992, Yu Guangzhong has often returned to the mainland to give lectures. He has been awarded visiting professor of more than 20 universities, and served as resident poet and writer of Peking University and Macau University.

He has won numerous honors in his life, including honorary doctorates from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Taiwan Political University, Sun Yat sen University and Macao University.
