Introduction to Xihuang temple in Beijing

In ancient times, Xihuang temple and Donghuang temple were called Huangsi or Shuanghuang temple. Donghuang temple is located near Zhongzhou Road and no longer exists. There is an old saying in Beijing: 'the hall of Donghuang temple, the tower of Xihuang Temple'.

In the Qing Dynasty, there are three oldest temples, known as the three temples in the capital. They are: Pusheng temple in Donghuamen, Yong'an temple in Beihai, and Xihuang temple in the north of the city.

Xihuang temple is also called Dalai Temple because it was built by Dalai V, the religious leader of Tibet, in 1652.

In 1780, the sixth Panchen Lama died in the temple. In 1782, Gao Zong built the qingjinghuayu pagoda to commemorate the sixth Panchen Lama. Because the mantra of the sixth Panchen Lama was buried in the pagoda, it is also called the Panchen Lama pagoda.

In 1987, Xihuang temple was transformed from Erdeni, the tenth Panchen Lama, into a higher Buddhist College of the Tibetan Language Department of China, but it has not been opened to the public since then.
