How is the typhoon named after the strong landing of typhoon Tiange Zhuhai?

This time, the strong attack of typhoon pigeon has caused great economic losses to the coastal areas of our country. Do you know how to name the typhoon? It is reported that the center of Typhoon "Pigeon" No. 13 this year has landed in the southern coastal area of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, around 12:50 yesterday, with the maximum wind force of 14 levels near the center. According to Zhuhai news, "Pigeon" will become the typhoon with the greatest impact on Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao since Typhoon "Ruby" in 1964.

So, although it's called "Pigeon", isn't this typhoon really cute~

So, why is this typhoon named "Pigeon", and how is it named?

Before 2000, when there was no uniform nomenclature, China used numbers to call typhoons. In Europe and the United States, it is usually called by a person's name.

In 1997, the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) decided to unify the naming rules of typhoons and put them into use since 2000 in order to avoid the confusion of appellation caused by disorderly naming.

The naming method is to make a naming table in advance, and then repeat it year after year in order. There are 140 names in the naming table, which are provided by 14 member countries and regions in the Asia Pacific region of WMO, including Cambodia, China, North Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Micronesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. Each country or region provides 10 names.

These 140 names are divided into 10 groups with 14 names in each group. They are listed in alphabetical order according to the English names of each member country, and they are used circularly in order, that is, the naming table of tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea, and the original tropical cyclones are kept.

The naming features of typhoon are: each name is no more than 9 letters; easy to pronounce; there is no bad meaning in each member's language; it will not bring any difficulty to each member; it is not the name of commercial organization; the name selected should be recognized by all members, and if any member objects, this name cannot be used as typhoon name.

As you can see, this time 'pigeon'. It's the name of Japan.

The first 10 Chinese names are: Dragon King, Wukong, jade rabbit, petrel, Aeolus, sea god, cuckoo, electric mother, seahorse and begonia, all of which are mythological. In 2005, Dragon King was removed and replaced by sea anemone. Seahorse was also removed last year.

Why are typhoon names removed?

The world Typhoon Committee has a regulation that once a typhoon causes great loss of life and property or casualties and is notorious, or is retired due to the name itself, it will have the name permanently, which will be deleted from the naming list. Other tropical cyclones will no longer use the name, that is to say, it will always be named here Sub tropical cyclone, this is delisting.

In this way, a new name must be added to the naming table. The name of the vacancy will be re recommended by the original country or region.

For example, the "Dragon King" and "seahorse" in mainland China were all removed because of their heavy influence.

Most of the typhoons that have been removed are due to relatively large losses and casualties, but there are also lovely reasons for being removed.

"Yanyan Xinxin" in Hong Kong, China. The Hong Kong Observatory asked for its retirement on the ground of no local representation. Hong Kong said it was not satisfied, and sent "tingtingting" again, because it was unrepresentative, it was retired. But we can see that the names of Hong Kong still have "Shanshan" and "Lingling". So what is Hong Kong's obsession with such reduplicated names?

And Sonamu Qingsong, named by North Korea, was removed from the Malaysian coast because of the panic caused by its pronunciation similar to tsunami.

It is also hoped that the original intention of professional organizations to name typhoons in those years will attract people's attention, so that more people can pay attention to the meaning of typhoon hazards. Now it is because of the name of the typhoon that people pay more attention to it.

For example, a few days ago, the Central Meteorological Station published a micro blog saying that it had the idea of drawing prizes for typhoon naming right, which was not implemented, but this micro blog triggered an unprecedented wave of forwarding by netizens.

With 100000 forwarding comments and 30000 comments, netizens have put forward the names of "skin shrimp", "package mail" and "Er Gouzi", which gather the wisdom of the masses. The weather station had to stand up to make everyone serious.

To put it bluntly, up to now, pigeon has caused a lot of damage. Shenzhen has shut down, closed down, closed its business and classes. In addition, Zhuhai, Huizhou, Zhongshan, Guangzhou, Taishan and other places have also suffered from wind disasters to varying degrees. Urban traffic and people's lives have been greatly affected, and probably will be removed.

Although the name is lovely, the typhoon is not. When thinking of names for typhoons, we should not forget our original intention, but also do a good job in the prevention and response of typhoon disasters.
