Why can't we drink cephalosporins? What are the dietary taboos

Sihaiwang: cephalosporins can accelerate the destruction of cell wall and play a bactericidal role. When we encounter a cold or fever in our life, we often use cephalosporins for adjuvant treatment, but do you know the taboo of taking cephalosporins? Can we drink after taking cephalosporins?

Dietary taboos of cephalosporins

Cephalosporins are a kind of antibiotics which are widely used in clinic. Because of its wide antibacterial spectrum, strong antibacterial activity and low side effects, cephalosporins are favored by clinicians. However, with the wide use of these drugs, many adverse reactions have emerged.

When drinking alcohol during the use of cephalosporins, if there are reactions such as facial flush, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, chest distress, palpitation, blurred vision, and even serious symptoms such as blood pressure drop, dyspnea, blurred consciousness, shock, etc., it is likely that the reaction between cephalosporins and alcohol is caused by 'disulfide wake-up like reaction'.

Disulfide wake-up reaction, also known as alcohol withdrawal sulfur reaction, is an emergency often encountered in the emergency room. It is a reaction caused by drinking alcohol or using alcohol containing drugs during the treatment of certain drugs (such as cephalosporins). Patients can have a reaction immediately after drinking alcohol, no matter beer, white wine, yellow wine, fruit wine, etc., some patients even use alcohol to disinfect their skin The patients who are sensitive to alcohol are particularly prominent.

Why is this reaction?

Alcohol is the main component of wine. Acetaldehyde is produced by oxidative metabolism in vivo. Acetaldehyde needs to be further metabolized by enzymes in hepatocytes, and finally carbon dioxide and water are produced. However, some drugs inhibit the activity of the above metabolizing enzymes, so that acetaldehyde cannot be metabolized normally and accumulates in the body, resulting in acetaldehyde poisoning, thus producing a series of poisoning symptoms.

The drug users can get sick 5-10 minutes after drinking alcohol, and the reaction lasts from 30 minutes to several hours. Its severity is directly proportional to the amount of drugs and alcohol consumption, and it is more serious if the person does not drink or has a small amount of alcohol. The reaction after intravenous administration is faster and more serious than oral administration.

Therefore, in order to avoid the occurrence of disulfide wake-up reaction, we should avoid alcohol during the use of cephalosporins and within one week after stopping the drug. In addition to not drinking alcohol, you should also avoid taking drugs containing ethanol (such as Huoxiang Zhengqi water, Yangyin Qingfei syrup, etc.), food (such as seasoning, fermented vinegar, Jiuxin chocolate, etc.) and supplements (such as ginseng royal jelly), etc.

In addition, in addition to cephalosporins, metronidazole, Ritalin, biguanides and sulfonylureas, which can cause such reactions, can not drink alcohol after use.
