What is the significance of the discovery of large oil fields in the Bohai Sea

CNOOC announced on the 18th that the oil and gas exploration of Bohai oilfield, China's largest offshore oilfield, has made another great discovery: Well Kenli 6-1-3, located in the north of Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, encountered an oil layer about 20 meters thick, and the annual output of crude oil of a single well can reach more than 400000 barrels. This is another major discovery after Bozhong 19-6, a 100 billion cubic meter gas field, which is of great significance to ensure China's energy security, stabilize the output of Eastern oil fields and promote the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

It is found that the drilling depth of well Kenli 6-1-3 is 1596m, and the annual output of tested crude oil reaches more than 400000 barrels. After being refined into gasoline, it can be used for about 10000 cars to drive normally for 5 years.

Since the late 1970s, the northern area of Laizhou Bay has experienced more than 40 rounds of exploration for more than 40 years, and the results are not ideal. The discovered reserves are small in scale and not concentrated in distribution, so it is impossible to establish effective production capacity.

In 2019, CNOOC continued to search for large and medium-sized oil and gas fields in various sea areas with unconventional theories and technologies, and made more than 10 new discoveries in domestic sea areas.

Kenli 6-1 oilfield discovered this time has large reserves, good oil properties and high test productivity; The discovery not only broke the situation of no commercial oil and gas discovery in the region for more than 40 years, but also showed the huge exploration prospect in the southern Bohai Sea, which laid a solid foundation for the realization of the goal of sustainable green and stable production of Bohai oil field for 10 years and 40 million tons.

CNOOC said that on the basis of this discovery, it will continue to promote the smooth operation of 8 new projects such as Bozhong 19-6 test area and Liuhua 16-2, China's first self operated packaged deepwater oilfield, and strive to make more new breakthroughs in more complex oil and gas reservoirs and deeper sea areas.
