The United Nations calls for attention to the locust plague, which may cause widespread food shortage
On February 10, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization called on countries to increase assistance to countries threatened by locusts. The organization said it had raised $21 million in aid funds, but there was still a large gap from the required $76 million.
FAO officials said that the number of locusts had increased 64 million times in one and a half years. These locusts had unprecedented destructive power and food shortages in many places.
