UFO flying saucer cloud in Beijing sky

On the morning of December 19, many netizens photographed a 'auspicious cloud' over Beijing, which was red against the sunrise. Some netizens said that the cloud was shaped like a flying saucer.

Bian Yun, a meteorological engineer of the China Meteorological Administration, told the Beijing Youth Daily that the cloud is called pod shaped cumulus, which is a common cloud. Bian Yun introduced that pod shaped cumulus clouds are usually formed at the junction of local ascending and descending airflow. After the updraft cools and encounters the downdraft, the cloud will not continue to rise, and its edge will gradually become thinner and form a pod shape due to evaporation.

There are folk proverbs that "tiles in the sky cloud, the dead on the ground" and "fish pods in the sky, find water and make tea", indicating that Lai like cumulus clouds have a good indication of the weather. Bian Yun told reporters that pod shaped cumulus clouds can not directly predict the weather. If they are combined with warm and humid air flow activities and the clouds are gradually thickened, cloudy days and even precipitation may occur. However, Beijing is affected by the cold air this morning. The wind is strong and the dry and cold air strikes. Such local clouds can't play a big role. Today and tomorrow, Beijing is mainly sunny.
