Cause of Russian aircraft carrier fire suspected fire caused by welding operation

The Russian aircraft carrier admiral Kuznetsov caught fire at the maintenance port on December 12. Russian media reported that the number of injured increased to 10.

"Kuznetsov" aircraft carrier is the only active aircraft carrier in Russia. It has been repaired and modernized in the port of Murmansk state in northern Russia for two years.

Russian news agency quoted zweizdochka shipyard sources as saying that the welding operation caused a fire.

Tass reported that the upper deck of the aircraft carrier caught fire. At the time of the incident, there were more than 400 people on board the aircraft carrier Kuznetsov.

The fire is believed to be under control. Russian satellite news agency quoted the emergency department as saying that the number of injured increased to 10.

The aircraft carrier 'Kuznetsov' was commissioned in 1991 and has not undergone complete overhaul and comprehensive upgrading before. The Russian military expects the Kuznetsov to extend its service for 20 years after maintenance and modernization.

Russia previously predicted that the aircraft carrier 'Kuznetsov' will be repaired in 2020 and return to service in the Northern Fleet in 2021. However, a crane hit the aircraft carrier deck from a height last October, leaving a hole about 5 meters long and 4 meters wide. This situation has triggered speculation that the repair operation may be delayed.
