Mrs. Dodd's mother died when she was 13 years old, leaving six children behind; Mrs. Dodd's father, Mr. William Smart, raised six children on his own in a rural farm in eastern Washington state. In 1924, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States, supported father's day as a national holiday. In 1966, Lyndon Johnson, President of the United States, announced that the third Sunday of June, that is, Mr. Smart's birthday, would be father's day.
