Dead finless porpoise tail fin tied with brick dead finless porpoise has been sent to autopsy

The discovery of a dead finless porpoise with a brick tied to its tail fin in Dongting Lake, Hunan Province, continues to attract attention. Today (November 8), a reporter from the Beijing News learned from the Dongting Lake finless porpoise protection center in Yueyang City, Hunan Province that an autopsy is being conducted on the dead finless porpoise. The protection center will work with the fishery administration department to further strengthen the supervision and protection of the Dongting Lake finless porpoise.

It was previously reported that at about 9 a.m. on November 7, Yueyang Dongting Ecological Protection Association salvaged a dead Yangtze finless porpoise in the waters of Yueyang Dongting Lake Bridge. The finless porpoise has slight scratches on its body surface, and its tail fin is bound with nylon rope and hung with red bricks. A member of Yueyang Dongting Ecological Protection Association said that after salvaging the finless porpoise ashore, they found that it was a male finless porpoise with mild decay. It is suspected that someone tied the brick to the finless porpoise's tail fin with nylon rope, resulting in the finless porpoise's inability to swim and finally died.

Today, the Beijing News reporter learned from Hunan Yueyang Dongting Lake finless porpoise protection center that the dead finless porpoise has been sent to Wuhan Institute of aquatic biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences for autopsy, and the cause of death is under investigation. A staff member of the finless porpoise Protection Center said that they have installed monitoring on the land around Dongting Lake, but there is no monitoring in the water area. They will further strengthen the supervision and protection of finless porpoises and other animals with the local fishery administration department.
