How to connect MacBook external monitor MacBook external monitor tutorial

The MacBook notebook screen is relatively small. Many netizens want to use the MAC external display. In fact, the MAC system provides users with very convenient and simple setting options. The following small editor teaches you to set up your external display step by step.

First, connect the external monitor to the power supply, and then connect the data cable to your Mac (don't forget to buy the adapter cable when buying the monitor, because the display port provided by the MAC is generally minidp or thunderbolt, and thunderbolt is downward compatible)

Turn on the display and the system will automatically recognize it. Turn on the system preference setting and check this item to see the display setting window on both displays;

Here, you can set the main display. The so-called main display is the display where the system dock, desktop and statusbar are located. The setting method is very simple. You can directly drag and drop the small white bar at the top here;

You can set the arrangement method of the two desktops according to the placement position of your monitor, that is, whether your new monitor is on the left or right. According to the way above my photo, my settings are as follows:

Let's talk about the external display mode:

As far as I know, there are four display modes of MacBook external display:

1. Closure mode

That is, only the external display is used for display, and the notebook display does not display. At the same time, the cover can be closed for use. In terms of display performance, this display mode is to maximize the use of the graphics card. The graphics card can focus on the external display, so the display effect is the best. At the same time, the display does not work, which will help the heat dissipation after closing the cover. It is the most common application of external display.

2. Mirror mode

That is, both the notebook display and the external display display display the same complete picture at the same time, and the notebook will enter the sleep state when the cover is closed. In terms of display performance, this display mode requires the graphics card to allocate resources to display on two displays at the same time, so the display effect is the worst. It is generally used in places where there are no great requirements for display effect in communication, lectures and meetings.

3. Extended mode

That is, the same picture can be extended to more than two displays respectively, so that each display can display different parts of the same picture, and the notebook will enter the sleep state when the cover is closed. This display mode also requires the graphics card to allocate resources on multiple displays, but it consumes less resources than the mirror mode, so the display effect is general, It is generally used in the workplace where multiple screens use multiple programs at the same time. Due to the separation of MAC programs, this mode is also widely used under Mac.

4. Mixed mode

In the case of mixed use of image mode and expansion mode, there should be more than three displays (including the laptop's own display). This mode can expand and display a picture on two or more displays, while another (or more) displays mirror the expanded picture. This mode consumes the most graphics card, and the effect is not particularly ideal, It is generally used in special complex occasions.

Four mode setting problems:

It is preferred to look at the preferred order of several modes. When there is no setting, the external display is the expansion mode. If the image mode is checked, the priority of the image mode is the highest (that is, if the image mode is checked, it is likely that it will not enter the cover mode and expansion mode). In the expansion mode, set and drag to enter the mixed mode.

1. Cover closing mode setting

In this mode, the external power supply must be guaranteed, otherwise it may not be awakened. First connect the power supply, then connect the display, and then divide it into two parts. If it is a wired mouse and keyboard, close the cover and directly click the mouse and keyboard to wake up directly; If it is a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, set it in Bluetooth settings that it can be awakened by the device (Bluetooth settings - select device - Advanced - check option), then close the cover and click the device to wake up. The mirror mode cannot be checked when the cover is closed.

Exit the cover closing mode. After entering the cover closing mode, unplug the external display cable or select the mirror mode in the display settings to exit the cover closing mode. However, if the display is not Apple's or cannot be sure whether it supports hot plug, it's best to click sleep first and unplug the cable in the sleep state.

2. Mirror mode setting this mode is very simple. Connect the external display, set the resolution of two or more displays in the display options (preferably set to the same, but generally the system will set it automatically), then click "arrange" and check "mirror display".

Exit the mirror mode and remove the tick of 'mirror display'. Note that the cover closing mode and expansion mode cannot be entered in the mirror mode.

3. Extended mode settings

This mode is the default mode. It is connected to the external display. The mirror mode is not checked. It is not awakened by the cover closing to enter the cover closing mode. That is the expansion mode. In the extended mode, click arrange, and then arrange according to the instructions.

Exit the expansion mode. Just enter the cover closing mode or check 'mirror display' to exit the expansion mode. Note that the expansion operation may need to be set on the notebook display.

4. Blend mode settings

Set three or more displays to the expansion mode, and then press and hold the option key to drag a display icon to the display to be mirrored, so as to mirror the two displays (for more mirroring, also follow this method). Release the option and drag the others to the expansion mode.
