The origin of May 4th Youth Day

On May 4, 1919, in order to protest against the imperialist countries' support for Japan's aggression against China at the Paris peace conference, young students in Beijing held a massive demonstration, which finally developed into an anti imperialist and anti feudal Patriotic Movement participated by the people of the whole country. " The May 4th movement showed the strong will of the Chinese people to defend national independence and strive for democracy and freedom, marking the beginning of China's new democratic revolution.

It was in 1939 when the 20th anniversary of the May 4th Movement was commemorated that the two camps in modern China made their clear-cut evaluation of the May 4th movement public.

On the eve of the May 4th Movement in 1939, the Youth Federation in Yan'an issued an initiative to the national youth to designate the May 4th movement as China's youth day. This proposal was agreed by local youth groups. At first, the government of the Republic of China disagreed, but later was forced to agree to this provision.

Soon, they felt that this provision was very dangerous, so they changed March 29 to Youth Day (this day was the day when 72 martyrs died in Huanghuagang uprising on the eve of the 1911 Revolution).

However, the border region government under the leadership of the Communist Party has always defined the May 4th as youth day. In December 1949, the Administrative Council of the Central People's government officially announced May 4th as youth day, referred to as "May 4th Youth Day".
