What are the moving legends of the low spirit festival of the Gaoshan people

It is said that the origin of a dwarf spirit sacrifice: it is said that a long time ago, there were a group of people living in the cave at the middle of maybalay mountain (now the right bank of the upper reaches of Shangping River in Wufeng Township, Hsinchu). Although they were only three feet tall, they had strong arms and were good at witchcraft, so the saixia people who were close to them were afraid of them; However, because dwarves are good at singing and dancing, the saixia people invite dwarves to sing and dance together when they hold a sacrifice at the rice chestnut harvest every year.

In addition to singing and dancing, dwarves often take the opportunity to invade Xiasai women, and dwarves are good at stealth, so it is difficult for saixia people to find evidence. Often after the sacrifice, they find that many saixia women are pregnant. Therefore, the resentment of the saixia people against the dwarves deepened day by day. Until one year's sacrifice, when the dwarves were flirting with Xiasai women, they happened to be seen by the saixia people. The saixia people had no patience and racked their brains to devise strategies. Therefore, they secretly cut half of the loquat tree that the dwarves often climbed to rest on their way back, and then covered the gap in the tree with mud. Indeed, the dwarfs climbed to the loquat tree to rest one by one according to the old habit. When the dwarfs had no time to respond, the loquat tree fell down instantly. The dwarfs fell into the abyss one by one and drowned. Only two dwarfs survived. Although the two dwarves knew that the saixia people designed to harm their people, they were weak and helpless. They decided to leave to the East. Before leaving, they also taught the saixia people the sacrificial songs and dance steps.

Although the saixia people got rid of their great troubles, they felt uneasy, so they began to offer sacrifices to the dwarves and appease their souls to solve their hatred. Since then, on the full moon night after the autumn harvest, the saixia people kept singing and dancing, invited the dwarf spirit to return, enjoyed with the saixia people again, and asked the dwarf spirit for forgiveness and blessing in the song. The dwarf spirit sacrifice was originally held once a year, about October 15 of the lunar calendar. Later, due to the prohibition of the Japanese, it was changed to hold a small sacrifice every two years and a large sacrifice every ten years.

Legend II

The plot is roughly the same, but the causes of dwarf spirit sacrifice are different. The saixia people cut the mountain loquat tree bridge leading to the dwarf's residence in half, and the dwarves on the bridge fell into the water and perished. The remaining two dwarves incorporated the instructions of the saixia people into songs and dances, passed them to the saixia people, and warned them to abide by the agreement, hold a memorial ceremony to commemorate the dwarves and sing the sacrificial songs taught by the dwarves, otherwise the crops will fail or even destroy the family. Then he tore the brown leaves of the mountain along the river bank to the East and left with a curse, but only the Zhu family school was complete, so the people surnamed Zhu were the chief priests at each sacrifice.
