Soliris, the most expensive medicine in the world

the most expensive drug in the world is soliris, a high-cost rare disease drug produced by alexion company (alexion) in the United States. Soliris (eculizumab) is licensed to treat atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), a life-threatening blood disease that causes organ failure. About 70% of aHUS patients with the most common mutations die within one year, requiring dialysis or permanent kidney damage.

About 170 aHUS patients in the UK will spend 58 million euros on public health services in the first year, and the cost of treatment will rise to 82 million euros in five years, according to relevant reports. It was this price tag that prompted nice to issue a negative draft guide in March, in which it asked alexion to justify the cost of soliris.
