The largest plateau in the world

The largest plateau in the world is the Brazilian plateau

Brazil in South America, its north half is the world's largest plain -- Amazon plain, which is full of dense tropical rain forest; its southern half is the world's largest Plateau -- Brazil plateau, where the number is relatively sparse, mainly vast savanna.

The Brazilian plateau covers an area of more than 5 million square kilometers, more than double that of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. The highest bandela mountain is only 2884 meters, much lower than the Tibetan Plateau. Geologically speaking, the Qinghai Tibet Plateau is still very young, while the Brazilian plateau is very old. Its surface has become quite flat, and some hills are round like steamed bread.

Brazil plateau is located in the central and eastern South America, between the Amazon plain and the laplata plain, with an area of about 5 million square kilometers. The elevation is 300-1500 meters, and the ground is gentle and inclined to the West and North. Granite, gneiss, schist, phyllite, quartzite and other ancient basement rock series are exposed on the surface. Among them, the eastern part of quartzite and schist with hard lithology is characterized by ridge mountains or fault block mountains, protruding over the plateau; the western part is the goyas plateau and Mato Grosso plateau, with the characteristics of tableland. On the edge of the plateau, steep slopes with different degrees of urgency are commonly formed, and the rivers fall into waterfalls or rapids and cut into canyons.

The highest plateau in the world

The Qinghai Tibet Plateau is the largest plateau in China

The Qinghai Tibet Plateau is the largest plateau in China and the highest plateau in the world, so it is known as the roof of the world. The Qinghai Tibet Plateau covers an area of 2.4 million square kilometers, with an altitude of more than 3500 meters, including all of Tibet and Qinghai, Western Sichuan, southern Xinjiang, and part of Gansu and Yunnan.

The plateau is surrounded by mountains, with Himalaya Mountains in the south, Altun Mountains, Kunlun Mountains and Qilian Mountains in the north, Karakoram mountains in the West and Hengduan Mountains in the East. There are also Tanggula Mountain, Gangdise mountain, Nianqing Tanggula Mountain and so on. Most of these mountains are more than 5500 meters high, with more than 16 peaks. The plateau is divided into many basins and wide valleys by mountains. There are many lakes, such as Qinghai Lake and Namco Lake, which are rich in salt, borax and mirabilite.

The plateau is the birthplace of many major rivers in Asia, such as the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, Lancang River, Nujiang River, Yarlung Zangbo River and so on.

Due to the high terrain and the lack of heat in most areas, the average temperature in the hottest month above 4500 meters is less than 10 degrees centigrade. There is no absolute frost free period. It is difficult to mature grains and only suitable for grazing. The main livestock are yak, Tibetan sheep and Tibetan goat. Crops can be planted in the valley below 4200 meters, mainly including highland barley, wheat, pea, potato, rape and other cold resistant varieties. The latitude of Yarlung Zangbo River Valley is low and there is no severe cold in winter, so wheat can survive the winter safely.

There are many hydropower stations, coal mines, iron and steel plants, chemical plants, wool mills and paper mills on the plateau. At present, Sichuan Tibet, Qinghai Tibet, Yunnan Tibet, new Tibet and other four highways enter the plateau, and the plateau railway will soon be built. Civil flights are available to Xining, Golmud and Lhasa.
