Global computer shipment reached 2.4 billion, 9% higher than 2012

According to the news on the morning of April 8, Beijing time, Gartner, an American market research organization, predicted in its latest report released last week that the global shipment of computing devices such as personal computers, tablets and mobile phones will be close to 2.4 billion units this year, an increase of 9% over 2012.

Gartner also expects global computing device shipments to be close to 3 billion units by 2017. Although Gartner did not predict the market share of each device manufacturer in the report, it pointed out that Android operating system and tablet devices are becoming increasingly important.

Android is currently the world's largest mobile operating system and is expected to further consolidate this position this year. Gartner estimates that of the 2.4 billion computing devices shipped this year, about 861 million use the Android operating system. Microsoft Windows ranked second, with 354 million devices using this operating system. Apple's OS X and IOS devices totaled 293 million, ranking third. The number of devices using BlackBerry OS is about 31 million.

Although Android will still occupy a dominant position in the mobile operating system market, it also faces a huge development obstacle, that is, platform fragmentation. At present, different versions of Android system are widely used in low-end smart phones, and Amazon Kindle and other products also use in-depth customized versions of Android, so the fragmentation of this platform is serious.

"The Android operating system has a large number of users, but they don't directly contribute to Google's revenue," said Carolina milanesi, an analyst at Gartner. This is one of the problems faced by the Android platform, and I think it is also one of the reasons for the recent high-level changes of Google. '

Miranis pointed out that Android's market share will continue to expand as non brand tablets become popular in emerging markets. Although the apple brand still has a strong appeal in the United States and Europe, the Android Tablet performs very well in countries such as Russia and China.

This is partly because consumers in developing countries first experienced the beauty of computing devices through smart phones. When they plan to buy larger computing products, they tend to prefer tablet computers, because the user interface of tablet computers is similar to that of smart phones and different from that of laptops or desktops.

In view of this, Gartner predicts that traditional notebook and desktop computer shipments will continue to decline in the next few years, from 315 million this year to 272 million in 2017. However, ultramobile will become a bright spot in the PC market. Gartner defines this product as ultra light and thin electronic devices, such as Microsoft Surface pro and other hybrid tablets with Intel processors.

Gartner estimates that ultraportable devices will ship 24 million units this year and 96 million by 2017.
